How to Prayer 101

An attitude of receptivity is the first step

by Renae Bauer

What does Jesus want us to know about prayer?

In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector praying in the temple. The Pharisee’s prayer is filled with self-congratulation and judgment of others while the tax collector begs for God’s mercy. We know which prayer has the right attitude.

So what does Jesus want us to know about praying? In a word: humility or modesty.  To paraphrase Fr. Don Schwager, humility helps us to seek God’s help. Humility opens our ears and hearts to God’s holy message, and isn't this what we are truly seeking?

Thank you Sister for the reminder of the importance of living with humility...my Father taught this to me as a boy, still working on it!

Blessings Sister,
