Early History
The Sisters of St. Francis at Bay Settlement were officially recognized by the Diocese of Green Bay on March 14, 1881. As early as 1868, our founding Sisters -- Pauline LaPlante, Christine Rousseau, Pius Doyle, and Mary Van Lanen -- took up ministry including teaching and providing health care to immigrant families in Northeast Wisconsin at the request of our founding Father, Edward Francis Daems. We officially modified our name to Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross in 1956.
