Leadership through service and humility
by Sister Lynne Marie Simonich
In our Gospel for the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time, James and John demand some special privileges, asking Jesus to give them whatever they want. The other 10 apostles become quite upset when they heard the demands. Rather than allow an argument, Jesus reminds them that the role of a leader (or whoever wishes to be great) is to be a servant of all – willing to give up his or her life for the good of others. How did the apostles feel after Jesus spoke to them? Quite a lesson in humility! What a difference there would be in our world if leaders everywhere put others first and served with love and humility – and the same for each of us.
- What does “humility” mean to you?
- What specific things can each of us do to share in the humility of Jesus?
Thanks for the reminder to put others first and to serve with love and humility. I appreciate your clear, direct message to spur me on!
