Be filled with peace and God's Spirit
by Sister Jane Riha
Sunday we celebrate one of the most beautiful and powerful feasts of the Church, Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost comes from the Greek word “pentecostes” which means “fiftieth.” Penetecost is celebrated yearly, fifty days after Easter. We celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
The readings for this Sunday are filled with wonderful symbols to better help us understand the power and presence of God’s Holy Spirit among us always. There is wind, fire and light, and languages of a great array of cultures and people. Yet in the Gospel, Jesus comes and greets the apostles with peace. “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
The powerful gifts of the Spirit filled those persons so long ago. That same Spirit fills our lives today. We are called to take notice for we are called and sent to share the Good News.
Listen to the inner wisdom the Holy Spirit gives you. It may be a gentle whisper or a shaking conversion of heart. It may be an inspiration to offer your assistance in your parish community or neighborhood. Trust that the grace you need is already given to you.
You may find this mantra helpful by simply breathing gently in and out.
I breathe in peace. I breathe out love
Excellent Sister Jane, thanks for the reminder.
