The Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross applied for and received recognition by Interfaith Power & Light (IPL).  IPL is a network of state-based organizations with a shared mission to inform, train, and activate people of all faiths and faith communities to take concrete steps in response to climate change. Steps include the promotion of energy conservation, energy efficiency and renewable energy in order to protect Earth’s ecosystems, safeguard public health, and ensure just, sufficient and sustainable energy for all.

Our recent solar expansion now covers 50% of our Motherhouse electrical needs and offsets 195 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The expansion was an opportunity to apply for recognition as a “Cool Congregation.” Sister Rose Jochmann completed the application on our behalf.  We received news that the Community received the 2019 Runner-Up award in the category of “Renewable Role Model.” The judges were impressed by our solar site: the walking path, informational signs, and the setting of wildflowers and prairie grass. This award recognizes our Community’s leadership to protect the Earth and all creation and to help build a healthy environment for all.
