Reflection for March 10, 2024

From secret inquirer to bold follower

Nicodemus' journey into the light of truth is a model for us today

by Sister Lynne Marie Simonich

“Whoever lives the truth, comes to the light” (John 3:21).  Have you ever had one of those “aha” moments when everything becomes clear?  Nicodemus was a Pharisee and would come to visit with Jesus at night probably out of fear of being seen with Jesus.  He was a seeker in his heart – a secret inquirer.  He went from a secret follower to a public defender of Jesus.  When Jesus was questioned before his death, Nicodemus publicly questioned if Jesus should be arrested.  After Jesus’ death, Nicodemus was seen bringing myrrh and spices to the tomb.   His love for Jesus transformed him and brought him into the light of truth.  His “aha” moments gave him the courage to be a follower of the Light of the world.

There are times in our own lives when darkness seems so present – questions arise – answers are unknown.  Like Nicodemus, we, too, can be transformed by the presence of Jesus.  We, too, can place our lives in the heart of Jesus bringing us into those “aha” moments.

This Sunday, the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross and Associates remember the Founders of this Community:  Father Edward Daems (+1879)  and Sisters Christine Rousseau (+1900), Pauline LaPlante (+1926), Mary Van Lanen (+1921), and Pius Doyle (+1911).  The darkness they faced as this young Community formed became a beacon of light that still shines today.  We praise and thank God for these faithful followers who continue to inspire us.

Thank you for this beautiful reflection. You remind us that Jesus can transform us and bring us to those "aha" moments. Wonderful to connect this reflection with our Founders Day celebration.
